society of the public mole.
Society of the public mole is a radical art project centered around personal poetics and countermapping. Countermapping as a term is attributed to Nancy Peluso, who used the term to describe the production of maps by Indigenous forest users in Kalimanten to counter hegemonic and colonial defintions of land, and display their own narratives. Although coined in the 90s, countermapping is an older practice; maps recounting memory, place and feeling can combat Western maps based on property and propriety. Countermapping has many forms, and our project seeks to understand their forms and their potential for revealing and mending urban spaces through grassroots approaches. We aim to publish countermaps created by the public. We also want to provide an online map of resources, as well as PDF zines that can be downloaded, printed and distributed.
For instructions on how to create your own countermap, either collectively or individually, see instructions.
